The governments of Greece and Cyprus have signed separate memorandums of understanding with the Egyptian authorities to connect their power systems to Egypt through submarine connections.

The submarine interconnection plan will transmit electricity generated from renewable energy in North Africa to Europe. Relevant countries will sign a tripartite memorandum of understanding this week.

Kostas skrekas, Minister of environment and energy of Greece, said on twitter that the project is considered to have made a significant contribution to energy security in the region and ensured the flow of green energy between Greece and Egypt.

Skrekas called it a "bold strategic initiative", noting that the project will enhance the country's geopolitical role and consolidate its position as a green energy transmission hub in Southeast Europe.

As part of the project, Cyprus signed a memorandum of understanding to connect its power grid to the power grid of Egypt, thereby establishing a cooperation framework to promote the design, licensing, development and implementation of the plan. The agreement aims to speed up the approval process and feasibility study.

"For Cyprus, the power connection with Egypt may become the cornerstone of our transition to a green economy," said Natasa pileidou, Cyprus's energy minister.

Earlier this year, Israel, Cyprus and Greece agreed to develop a submarine cable project to connect their power grids. The so-called Eurasian interconnection plan will provide up to 2 gigawatts of transmission capacity after it is put into operation in 2025.
